Pet Wellness Exam

A pet wellness exam is when a veterinarian has the opportunity to examine your pet and evaluate their health. The vet will check for any health issues you may not have known about, address any concerns you have, and provide you with education on how to take care of your furry friend properly. At Highlands Animal Hospital, in Sebastian, FL, we provide wellness exams for pets in our community. Our animal hospital is an excellent veterinary practice that ensures your pet is up to date on their shots and other veterinary care.

Medical History

The first portion of your pet wellness exam includes a member of our staff asking you to fill out a detailed questionnaire about your pet. You'll answer questions about any previous issues, allergies, injuries, or surgeries your pet has. You'll be asked questions about whether your pet has been sick recently, in particular, if your pet is due for any vaccinations.

Physical Examination

During your pet's wellness exam, your dog or cat will undergo a physical examination. Our vet looks at all parts of your pet's body to look for any signs of disease, infection, or any similar issues.

Blood, Urine, and Stool Samples

Our vet may recommend your pet undergo blood, stool, and urine exams.

The blood test is performed during the appointment. Our vet may order a chemistry panel and complete blood cell count (CBC). The blood tests can identify infections, anemia, and organ problems. Our vet may order a thyroid evaluation based on your pet's medical history. Sometimes, your pet will recommend this test after the physical examination if a problem was identified. During a wellness exam, our vet may also order a heartworm test, which is a blood test.

For the stool exam, you are given a specimen cup to collect a sample and return in the future. This particular test is for parasites. A urinalysis can detect urinary tract infections (UTIs). It's also useful in checking to see if your pet's kidneys are functioning. Diabetes is another condition our vet can check by providing a urine sample.

We offer annual wellness bloodwork at very discounted rates to allow us to offer the best preventative care.  Ask your veterinarian during your appointment regarding these special wellness bloodwork packages!

Vaccinations

Another portion of your pet's wellness exam is the vaccinations. You can make sure your pet is updated on their shots that will keep them safe which will allow them to travel when necessary and in some cases remain compliant with the law. Vaccines stimulate your pet's immune system to react and develop antibodies toward a particular microbe. If your pet comes in contact with that particular virus or bacteria, their immune system will respond. Either your pet will have a mild reaction or no reaction at all.
